Cascade's mission
Cascade Policy Institute was founded in January
1991 as a nonprofit research and educational organization to
focus on Oregon state and local issues. The Institute's mission
is to explore and advance public policy alternatives that foster
individual liberty, personal responsibility, and economic opportunity.
Publications, events and programs
Cascade publishes policy studies, quarterly
newsletters, and commentaries on a variety of topics, including
education, the environment, growth management, transportation,
fiscal policy, health care, social services and more. The Institute
hosts conferences with local and national experts, and organizes
educational programs, including the Independence Essay Competition
and debate workshops for Oregon high school students. Additionally,
Cascade facilitates the Children's Scholarship Fund-Portland,
which provides privately funded scholarships for low-income
children in the Portland area to attend the schools of their choice.
How to label Cascade
Those who subscribe to the principles of
individual liberty, limited government and free markets call
themselves by many names, including both conservative and
liberal-two perspectives that are presumed to be political
opposites. In fact, the right-left dichotomy is a false one,
far too limiting for the complexities of modern political,
social and economic thought. The philosophy that underlies
the Institute's work has increasingly come to be called
"libertarian." It combines an appreciation for private
enterprise and the market process with a respect for civil
liberties. In short, we believe that human happiness,
prosperity and social harmony requires a limited government
that upholds property rights and leaves individuals
free to pursue their dreams.
Policy, not politics
As a policy research organization, Cascade
necessarily examines many issues that will one day be
decided at the ballot box or in the legislature. That
said, the Institute focuses on ideas, not politics.
Cascade is independent; it is not affiliated with any
political party or organization. Further, the Institute
does not lobby the legislature or endorse candidates,
ballot initiatives or legislation. Instead the Institute
takes the long-range approach to its mission, working to
stimulate debate in questions of policy and the proper
role of government in a free society.
Funding sources
Cascade is supported through the generous,
voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, and
foundations. The Institute does not solicit or accept
any government funding. Cascade is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
educational organization; contributions are fully tax-deductible.
